Murfreesboro, nicknamed "The Boro", is situated in Rutherford County, in the central area of the southern state of Tennessee. The population is approximately 108,000 but it is considered part of the larger metropolitan Nashville area, which has a population of 1.6 million residents. In the 1800s, Murfreesboro was the state capital for eight years, until it was moved to Nashville. The first place one should see in Murfreesboro is the Visitor's Center, located inside Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce. The Visitor's Center can provide information on attractions, opening hours, prices and directions. In addition, the center also has exhibits about the history of the county.

The Discovery Center at Murfree Spring has hands-on exhibits about science, art, culture and nature. It is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Bradley Academy was the first school in Rutherford County. The Bradley Academy Museum and Cultural Center has exhibits regarding the history of the academy and of education in the state of Tennessee. The Murfreesboro/Rutherford County Center for the Arts hosts musical and theatrical performances throughout the year. It is also home to an art gallery with changing exhibits. Tickets for the performances may be purchased in advance online, by phone, or in person at the center's box office. Admission to the gallery is free.

From May 1 to December 1, Cannonsburgh Village welcomes visitors to participate in self-guided or guided tours of the many buildings that represent what life was like in Tennessee from the 1830s to the 1930s. There is a schoolhouse, a museum, a doctor's office, a general store, a blacksmith's shop and more. The village is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Built in the 1800s, Oaklands Plantation was once home to one of the area's most prosperous families, the Murfree-Maney family. Now restored and known as Oaklands Historic House Museum, guided tours are available Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Heritage Center of Murfreesboro and Rutherford County has information and exhibits that tell the area's Civil War story. Admission is free and the center is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Stones River National Battlefield is the site of the Civil War battle known as the Battle at Stones River, which took place from the end of 1862 into the early days of 1863. Self-guided tours of the museum and battlefield are available every day from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Every May, the city hosts JazzFest on Main Street, downtown. It features live musical performances, food and craft vendors and entertainment. From June through September, on the first Friday of each month, the city hosts Friday Night Live concerts at its downtown square. Admission is free and picnicking is encouraged. In nearby Smyrna, at Gregory Mill Park, from May through September, the Music at the Mill concert series takes place one Friday per month. Admission is free and there are food vendors on site. Also nearby, in La Vergne, the Old Timers' Festival takes place every September. The festival features musical performances, food and craft vendors, fireworks and a parade.

For the visiting sports fan, there are a couple of interesting options in nearby Nashville. The Tennessee Titans play for the National Football League at LP Field. The National Hockey League is well represented by the Nashville Predators, who play at Bridgestone Arena.

The winter weather in Murfreesboro sees lows of 30 degrees Fahrenheit and average highs of around 50. In the spring, the low is about 45 degrees and the high gets up to around 75. The lows in the summer stay around 67 with highs climbing the mid-80s on average. Fall temperatures range between 45 and 82 degrees.
